The frame and body on highboys remain in the original configuration. No fabrication work on the floorboard or z'ing of the frame. These hot rodders were interested in going faster instead of creature comforts so their cars tended to be minimalistic in construction. This meant that the fenders and running boards came off. Channeling made the bodies sit lower and look sleeker than the cars with the body sitting on the frame.

Ford Model A Highboy - Hot Rod Network
Being raised in Southern California, hot rodder Terry Cramer was the archetypal fish-out-of-water when he was summoned to Boston for Coast Guard duty back in the fall of Used to the year-round warmth of sunny SoCal, Terry was quickly taken aback by the chilly temps and short summer that New England had to offer.
But interestingly enough, though the city featured both a climate and culture that was quite different from his lifelong home in the Golden State, Terry soon realized that no matter where you are, hot rodders are hot rodders. And that was a constant that helped smooth the transition from his California beach roots to his new home on the New England coast.
Young Terry was smitten, to say the least. During his time stationed in Portsmouth, a town just north of the Boston metro area, Terry got a yearning to build a roadster, a California-style hot rod like they had back home.
It was a design element not typical to the left-coast style he favored. Terry wanted a highboy, and he was prepared to do what he had to do to see it through to the finish. So he took leave from the service in and headed back to Manhattan Beach, California, to scout for a suitable donor car. Terry found what he was looking for in a modified roadster that had been a Southern California hot rod back in the day.
He received the car as a full-fendered ride, dressed with a dropped axle up front and sporting a set of split wishbones on the flanks. The rod also had several other typical modifications from the day, including juice brakes and a grille cut to fit.
The car had no motor or transmission with it, which was just fine with Terry. He was going to lay out his own drivetrain for his new roadster. Once back east, Terry started his search for the parts needed to get this build moving. To start, an F-1 steering box was located, followed by an early Halibrand Culver City—model quick-change rearend from an old local midget race car in nearby Manchester.
To top it off, Terry found a set of cherished Duplex gauges for the Last but not least, a Glide seat was sourced, along with several different styles of headlights. The motor for this project turned out to be a deal-breaker. His first choice was a small-block backed by a Muncie four-speed. But Terry realized he would need to modify the firewall to accommodate the Chevy powerplant.
Being a fullsize kinda guy, this would impinge on the legroom Terry needed to fit comfortably in the car. So he sourced a TCI frame next, hoping the new chassis would help him space the motor out away from the firewall.
With that, Terry decided to halt the build and later regroup with a fresh outlook and direction. First, New Hampshire rescinded its fender requirements and allowed open-wheels cars to be registered in the state. Second, he got a sweet deal on an original frame. Those two breakthroughs got the project moving in a forward direction again.
The man had taken apart a Deuce during his high school days and stashed the frame in his garage for safekeeping. Since it was 3 inches longer than his Model A frame, this would give him the space needed to fit both him and his future powerplant comfortably. In , Terry sourced the heartbeat of this ride. Still wanting a Chevy powerplant with mids style, he found a inch small-block by way of a local car meet. An attendee had bought the motor thinking it was a After realizing it was the smaller , he put it off in a corner of his garage and replaced it with another Chevy engine.
What Terry envisioned was a period-correct, pre, highboy-styled hot rod, built with a newer Chevy powertrain. He figured this is what some young hot rodder would have done to his ride once the new wave of OHV engines came out in the mid s.
There, the two sat down and hashed out the details that would become this beautiful, period-correct roadster. Terry knew he had the right man for the job. Jim had previously built a similar roadster on Deuce rails for another customer, a ride that Terry greatly admired. That particular would be a great inspiration for the build process, and it solidified many of the concepts that Terry wanted on his own car.
First, Jim mocked up the in bare metal. The roadster body was in excellent shape, and after some pinching up front at the cowl area, was fitted to the frame. The back end of the chassis was bobbed, and since a typical tank was not used out back, a roll pan was designed and fabricated for the build.
The wheelbase was slightly stretched, so a new hood needed to be fabricated. Jim made an aluminum template and sent it to Rootlieb Hood Company, which finished off the custom piece.
A truck dashboard was custom-fit to the roadster and mocked up with the rare Duplex gauges Terry sourced. The quick-change, headlights, and seats were all added to the mix, and the panels were finish-fit to perfection. Once the two men were satisfied, the rod was torn down and prepped for paint. Terry also decided to finish all the front-end components in argent silver for a true period look. From there, Terry took over, building the engine and bringing it back to its stock, mids look and performance.
Once completed, he handed it over to Jim for final fitting and setup. Once these pieces were completed, all that was needed was some troubleshooting, typical tweaking, and of course, mandatory testdrives and shakedown. Once finished, the immaculate was ready for delivery to Terry. After 45 years of trial and error, the roadster was finally there for Terry to enjoy. Without their help, this project would not have come to fruition. It was a long road from initiation to completion, but what Terry ended up with was the roadster he had always dreamed of—a ride that brought back days of his youth on the left coast, and one he could move forward in with his new life on the right coast.
