Feb Posted by Vanessa Lee Thomas. My training buddy sent me a text to confirm that the school was closed. Master Saidi had given us some extra pointers and demonstrated how the form movements pertain to a conflict situation so that we visualise the applications.
We repeated our forms side by side and it felt really awesome to see the flow of movements conducted in unison. Patience is certainly a necessary virtue when learning martial arts. My inner ear issues made me susceptible to vertigo and I wanted to be sure that I could get back up again after rolling.
Well it was now or never I figured — one of those situations again where you feel the fear but do it anyway — so I did! Now that we would be going to tournament we also needed to get patches for our doboks. I am rather excited about getting mine — it will feel like an outward sign connecting me to the ancient traditions of this martial arts system. Wikipedia had the following interesting points about the uniform:.
However, an alternate reason could be that according to Korean tradition, the color black is associated with wisdom. Tournament is approaching and we have special training sessions to help us iron out all the errors and increase our confidence. I am planning to attend every single one of them! Posted in Kuk Sool Won. Leave a comment. Jan It seems perverse to my non-athletic brain to put jumping and kicking into the same move. It was my third Kuk Sool Won class. It starts at 7pm so at 6pm I can already feel my anxiety starting to build. We get through family dinner and I can sense that my heart rate has gone up and my palms are getting clammy.
Tonight my hubby and two kids are escorting me to class. I can see the kids eyes gleaming as they look at me in my black dobok uniform -they look pleased as punch with me. This of course does not prevent them from mocking me for being a white belt. Kids — they certainly know how to keep your ego in check. Rick leads warm-up and since Master Saidi is busy with tournament registrations he keeps us going with kicking practice.
I managed the first few ok but then Rick mentions the dreaded spin kick. My martial arts loving doc said I would be fine as long as I took it slowly. Here goes nothing I thought. My kicking partner was a rather shy girl with a yellow stripe belt and a hair clip that kept falling out.
I got rather confused with the spin kicks not always knowing which leg to kick with after I turned but I soldiered on. I asked another student, Paul, to demonstrate the kick again and he kindly obliged. I was told though that my kick was fine — I just needed to believe I could do it.
Then Master Saidi called for some jump front kicks. I took two steps, jumped and kicked and my foot hit the target with a resounding thwack! Like hitting the sweet spot on a driver.
I just did it. I believed I could. Disclaimer: The views expressed here are solely those of the author in her private capacity and do not in any way represent the views of Master Saidi or that of the World Kuk Sool Won Association. Nervous energy consumed me as I drove through the evening traffic.
The dojang training hall loomed large before me. The previous class was still in session. I tried not to focus on what the students were doing as I knew it would only escalate my anxiety.
My lizard brain wanted to retreat. What was I thinking? A something year old with a very unsuccessful track record in anything sports related, starting a martial arts class where the average student was likely to be at least 30 years younger!
A sense of trepidation gripped me but I knew I was going to have to do this one scared! Feel the fear and do it anyway! I was handed the size 4 and went off to change. The rest of the hour past in a blur of stretches, kicks, breathing exercises, punches and sword play. I felt rather self-conscious — the only white belt in a sea of browns and blacks!
Other than that though — it was exhilarating and I felt like I was connecting with my inner Cynthia Rothrock. Respect and etiquette was palpable. It was a kind gesture. After the class the trainers were very encouraging. It was kind of them not to mock my lack of flexibility or dexterity. Although I still felt the weight of my inexperience, I knew that I was embarking on another journey of self discovery. Guess I would keep being terrified but I would also keep trying.

I have seen a few "Modified" versions The Korean Sword, unlike it's Japanses cousin, was modeled after the person who wielded it So, was Korean Battle armor all the same? Horseback armor vs. I have never been sure about the need for a Generals uniform at all.
In the WON I did always have one, in fact my 4th dahn suits has only had relatively few "outings". Anyone want to buy a nearly new 4th dahn WKSA suit?
Paypal accepted LOL At the moment we dont use them at our school. The main reason people bought them was so that they could take part in the weapons group at WKSA tournaments plus for judging and doing demos. As many of our demos have been done on wet grass, we tended to use regular training suits anyway, to avoid spoiling an expensive piece of clothing. In any case from the spectators point of view I have always felt that they like to see the actual Black Belt rather than some kind of fancy dress.
LOL:evil: Sorry if that sounds disrespectful We do however have slightly different training suits for Black Belts. They just have the addition of the name and rank in english, on the right upper arm and the Hangul for their rank down the left leg, with the "korenglish" version running horizontally across the top, for those who cant read hangul.
The writing is in Gold letters, although I now think it would have looked better in "Yellow Gold". Sounds like a stylish uniform, kiwi. I personally never cared for the general's dobok either. One nice thing about having a solid red trim, however, was the ability to throw it in the washing machine instead of having to take the damn thing to the dry cleaners.
I'm kind of partial to some of the things I've seen used in HKD. The diamond pattern stitching looks nice, and can be done in different color thread if rank delineation is wanted or warranted for your particular style of MA. So your ordinary BB would have a black lapel they have a black belt and need nothing else added to their uniform. Instructors could have a variety of colors to distinguish themselves as such.
White is a good choice, harking back to the old "skunk" uniforms as Marlin Sims called them which were exact replicas of the striped TKD blackbelt uniforms, only with an inverted color scheme. Herbo , Mar 26, I'm getting it embroiderd as we speak. I had the "plates" made longer and the trim done differently.
It was a little expensive Out-to-Lunch , Mar 26, Hyeongsa , Apr 3, I love them!! I do the WKSA version the best one and the official of kuk sool and I love the generals uniforms its amazing!!!!!!!

Kuk sool won is an extremely good Art and organisation I do not count myself as ignorant and I believemy instructor as and honest man due to what he told me about the history. And I do know about the kuk sool hwe history but there are many contradicting accounts to this beside the wksa history such as outside produced documentaries on kuk sool won and hwarang do. Hyeongsa , Mar 21, Also, in order to clear up any misunderstanding, my comprehension of what kuk sool hwe is is limited to "Kuk Sool Hwe is a school of hapkido that evolved into kuk sool.
